<p>Two early fall announcements:   <br><br>First, we’re thrilled to announce that the inimitable Elizabeth McCracken will judge our Issue 58 fiction contest.   The contest will open on November 27, 2025 and will close March 8, 2026.<br><br>Elizabeth’s nine books are <em>Here’s Your Hat What’s Your Hurry, The Giant’s House, Niagara Falls All Over Again, An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination, Thunderstruck &amp; Other Stories, Bowlaway, The Souvenir Museum, The Hero of This Book</em>, and the forthcoming <em>A Long Game: Notes on Writing Fiction</em>. Her short fiction has appeared in five editions of <em>The Best American Short Stories</em>, and she has received three Pushcart Prizes and two National Magazine Awards.</p>



<p>In the meantime, we’re currently open for general fiction and nonfiction submissions. <p>Big news today: Issue 57 is out online! You can read it at</p>



<p>The issue features our 2025 fiction contest finalists, who were chosen by Rachel Heng earlier this week. They are:</p>



<p>Winner: Randolph Thomas for “Voces Immortalis”<br>First Runner-Up: Anthony Otten for “Image &amp; Likeness”<br>Second Runner-Up: Catalina Bode for “A House with Cannons”</p>



<p>The new issue also includes work by Nahal Suzanne Jamir, John Salter, Montserrat Andrée Carty, Michael Deagler, Augustine Blaisdell, Jules Wernersbach, and more. The print edition, featuring all the same work, will be available in late summer or fall.</p>

<p>We are delighted to announce Rachel Heng as the judge of our 2025 fiction contest!</p>



<p>Rachel is the author of two novels, Suicide Club (2018) and The Great Reclamation (2023). The latter won the New American Voices Award and was a finalist for the Singapore Literature Prize and the Libby Book Award. It was also named a New York Times Editors’ Choice and a Best Book of 2023 by TIME Magazine, The New Yorker, Amazon Books, Town &amp; Country Magazine, Kirkus Reviews, a Sarah Selects Amazon Book Club and an April 2023 Indie Next pick. Her work has been published in The New Yorker, McSweeney’s Quarterly, Best New Singaporean Short Stories, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Esquire, and elsewhere, including here at StoryQuarterly (Issue 52). She has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts, Fine Arts Work Center, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, Vermont Studio Center, Hedgebrook, Kenyon Review Writers Workshop and the National Arts Council of Singapore.  <br><br>Our contest closes March 2, and you can enter through <a href="https://storyquarterly.submittable.com/submit">Submittable</a>.</p>

<p>We have the WINNERS of our 2024 fiction contest!</p>



<p>First prize ($500) is awarded to Marie Goyette for “Freefall.” Marie’s fiction has appeared in <em>The North American Review</em>, <em>Feminist Studies</em>, and <em>The Southeast Review</em>. She holds an MFA from the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where she won the Graduate Prize in Fiction.</p>



<p>First runner-up is Elmo Lum for “Feline.” Elmo’s short stories have appeared in the <em>New England Review, Web Conjunctions, Narrative</em>, and previously in <em>StoryQuarterly</em> (Issue 40).</p>



<p>Our second runner-up is Steve Chang for “Tell Me What I’m Waiting For.” Steve is a Taiwanese writer and educator from the San Gabriel Valley, California. His work appears in <em>Epiphany, Guernica, Grist, J Journal, North American Review, The Southampton Review</em>, and elsewhere.<br><br>All of these stories will be published in <em>StoryQuarterly</em> 56, coming soon!</p>



<p>We’re grateful to Deb Olin Unferth for judging. Deb is the author of two short story collections, two novels, a memoir, and a graphic novel. She’s won three Pushcart prizes and a Guggenheim fellowship, teaches at UT-Austin, and runs a creative writing program at a south Texas penitentiary.</p>

<p>We are so grateful to have Deb Olin Unferth on board as our 2024 fiction contest judge!</p>
<p>Deb is the author of the novels <em>Barn 8</em> and <em>Vacation</em>, the memoir <em>Revolution</em>, finalist for the National Book Critics’ Circle Award, two story collections, and the graphic novel <em>I, Parrot</em>. Her work has appeared in over fifty magazines and journals, including <em>Harper’s</em>, the <em>New York Times, The Paris Review, Granta</em>, and <em>McSweeney’s</em>. She has received a Guggenheim fellowship, three Pushcart Prizes, a Creative Capital Fellowship for Innovative Literature, fellowships from the MacDowell, Yaddo, and Ucross residencies.<br />She’s a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches for the Michener Center, the New Writers’ Project, and she also directs the Pen City Writers, the prison creative-writing program at a south Texas penitentiary.</p>

<p>The results are in from our 2023 fiction contest!</p>
<p>First prize ($500) is awarded to Joshua Bell for “A Retired Witch.” Joshua is a poet with two published collections, <em>No Planets Strike</em> and <em>Alamo Theory</em>. His fiction has appeared in <em>Bennington Review</em>, <em>Story</em>, <em>Ninth Letter</em>, <em>The Fabulist</em>, and <em>Black Telephone</em>. His first novel, <em>The Houseboat Veronica</em>, is forthcoming next spring.</p>
<p>First runner-up is Ashley Whitaker for “Naked Man, Billboard, Fort Worth.” Ashley’s fiction has appeared in <em>Tin House</em>. She lives in Austin and is at work on a novel.</p>
<p>Our second runner-up is Jessie Li for “Mouth and Heart.” Jessie was born in Hong Kong. Her writing has been published in <em>The New Yorker</em>, <em>The Atlantic</em>, <em>The Adroit Journal</em>, and elsewhere.</p>
<p>All of our prize winners will be published in <em>StoryQuarterly</em> 56, which will be out in late spring/early summer of 2024.</p>
<p>Many thanks to Emma Copley Eisenberg for judging. Emma is the author of <em>The Third Rainbow Girl: The Long Life of a Double Murder in Appalachia</em>. Her debut novel, <em>Housemates</em>, will be out in 2024 and her short story collection, <em>Fat Swim</em>, is forthcoming in 2025.</p>
