Submissions

What StoryQuarterly Is Looking For:
We are interested in previously unpublished literary fiction, including short stories, short shorts, and novel excerpts up to 6,250 words in length, and creative nonfiction. We select work on the basis of style, craft, freshness, and vision.

How To Submit:
All work must be submitted electronically through Submittable. Information about our current submissions status (open/closed) is also posted on our Submittable page.

Simultaneous Submissions:
We welcome simultaneous submissions but ask contributors to notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Reporting Time:
Reporting time is usually four to six months. Given occasional backlogs, potentially successful contributors may experience additional delays.

Payment:
We offer a small honorarium of $25. We offer a standard contract for first North American serial rights.

Contest Entries:
We run an annual fiction contest. The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up of are published in the issue, and the winner receives a prize of $500.

When to Submit:

Here are our submission windows for Issue 56, which we anticipate publishing in late spring/early summer of 2024.
 
Fiction general submissions: Friday, September 22, 2023 – Saturday, December 16, 2023
 
Nonfiction general submissions: Friday, September 22, 2023 – Tuesday, January 16, 2024
 
2024 fiction contest: Saturday, December 17, 2023 – Sunday, March 17, 2024
