2024 Fiction Prize Winners

We have the WINNERS of our 2024 fiction contest!

First prize ($500) is awarded to Marie Goyette for “Freefall.” Marie’s fiction has appeared in The North American Review, Feminist Studies, and The Southeast Review. She holds an MFA from the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where she won the Graduate Prize in Fiction.

First runner-up is Elmo Lum for “Feline.” Elmo’s short stories have appeared in the New England Review, Web Conjunctions, Narrative, and previously in StoryQuarterly (Issue 40).

Our second runner-up is Steve Chang for “Tell Me What I’m Waiting For.” Steve is a Taiwanese writer and educator from the San Gabriel Valley, California. His work appears in Epiphany, Guernica, Grist, J Journal, North American Review, The Southampton Review, and elsewhere.

All of these stories will be published in StoryQuarterly 56, coming soon!

We’re grateful to Deb Olin Unferth for judging. Deb is the author of two short story collections, two novels, a memoir, and a graphic novel. She’s won three Pushcart prizes and a Guggenheim fellowship, teaches at UT-Austin, and runs a creative writing program at a south Texas penitentiary.
